Got a question about parking? Turn to the expert... Dr. Parking!
Question
I travel to Chicago about every two weeks or so and almost always land up along Michigan Ave. and at Marshal Fields to do some shopping. I have a really had time finding good parking and I do not understand the policy on getting your car off the meter parking at 4:00pm around Marshal Fields. I have found a few garages that have early bird specials (in by 10am-out by 8pm) and night specials (after 4pm) for abou $13.00, but what do you suggest I do between those times when I am trying to find parking in the middle of the day? Is there any areas around Michigan Ave. that would have more street/meter parking available, or a garage or lot that you do not have to pay $30.00 for? I don't mind walking a bit! Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ben, I sure hope your holiday season was enjoyable! The parking situation in Downtown Chicago, as you already know, is not much to speak of. Unfortunately, the rates you mentioned are probably average at best. One suggestion I will make is for you to call a few of these parking garages and try to negociate long term rates. I've heard of people getting rates in the range of 100 dollars per month at best. You may even, as a regular, get better breaks as time goes along. Being a regular at a garage sometimes pays off. Talk to the manager/owner and see what you can do. I've included a few phone numbers to help you out. If you need more info, do not hesitate to send me another e-mail.
